Governor Rick Perry recently granted a proclamation recognizing May 6 -12, 2013 as the first ever “Celebration of STEM Education Week in Texas,” demonstrating his support of strong STEM education in schools as well as the importance of STEM education when it comes to preparing the youth of Texas for their futures.

Texas STEM academies and schools have made amazing efforts in working to close the wide gap between the number of STEM field college graduates and the number of skilled workers needed in STEM industry. It is time to unite in celebrating those outstanding efforts.

“Celebration of STEM Education Week in Texas” is a multi-level, collaborative effort across the state of Texas that aims to promote the value and benefit of strong STEM education, while actively developing ways to close the gap between STEM graduates and the much needed skilled workers required for STEM industry.

Recently our Mayor, Mr Matthew Marchant, also joined the efforts of Harmony Schools and STEM Academies by proclaiming the week of May 6-12 as a Celebration of STEM Education Week in Carrollton. read more . . .

Sky Ranch Science Based Camp

On March 21st and March 22nd, our 4th and 5th grade students had a great opportunity to visit Sky Ranch! Students experienced 2-days of educational classes along with other fun activities.

4th Grade Students
On Thursday, students tested different water samples to see which ones were polluted in their Limnology class. They conducted these water quality measurements using genuine scientific equipment. In the Limnology Center, students learned about life cycles and the water web.
On Friday, students learned about Native Americans. Students experienced daily living as a Native American through role playing; they were even given Native names. They also learned about Native American skills like, hunting with bows and arrows, making pottery, how to store food and how to keep warm in cold weather.

5th Grade Students
On Thursday, students attended Sky Ranch Expeditions class and learned about animal characteristics, animal behavior, anatomy, physiology and taxonomy. They also had an opportunity to collect, observe and classify insects. Finally, students observed live animals such as a boa constrictor, green iguana, sugar gliders, tarantula, and many others.
On Friday, students built rockets, launched them and measured their distance in their Forces of Nature class. Students also observed parent volunteers moving along zip lines and then later, students calculated the speed of moving objects on the zip lines using different weights. Lastly, they learned about the rock and carbon cycle, and about fossil fuel.

A big THANK YOU to our teacher and parent volunteers and to Aman G., our camp site nurse.
We look forward to next year's trip!

This is a video of the first annual College Acceptance Day PEP Rally held on May 4th, 2012 by Harmony Public Schools (HPS) at the George R. Brown Convention in Houston, Texas. More than 3,000 middle school and high school students from 13 Houston-area HPS campuses attended this exciting event to celebrate our Graduating Seniors as they announced publically for the first time what College they would be attending in the Fall of 2012. Many of the Graduates were either the first-in-family or a first-generation family member to be accepted to a 4-yr College. More than 50% of these graduates went on to major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) fields in College. This event was also a part of our annual Field Trip day to the I-SWEEEP International Science Fair. Created and Hosted each year by HPS, I-SWEEEP is the largest High School Science Fair in the United States, bringing together over 600 High School students across 44 States and more than 70 countries.

Four Harmony Campuses Made into the Challenge Index

Washington Post has announced its Most Challenging High Schools list of 2012. Four Harmony high schools made the Challenge Index and three of them in the top 100 out of 1900 schools in the list.

The Challenge Index of Washington Post ranks high schools since 1998 based on the student achievement on IB, AP, and college level tests (SAT, ACT, etc.) and graduation rates. The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in 2011 divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. Lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E). A (P) next to the school's name denotes a private school.

See the detailed list here.
